Mark Adams to Discuss “Meet Me in Atlantis” on April 16

Come to the Library on Thursday, April 16, when Pelham author Mark Adams will talk about his latest book, Meet Me in Atlantis: My Obsessive Quest to Find the Sunken City. The event starts at 7:30 p.m. Adams, author of The New York Times bestseller Turn Right at Machu Picchu, will discuss a subculture most of us didn’t know existed – of people who are still searching for the lost city of Atlantis. In fact, the search for the city is so popular it actually has a name— “Atlantology”—and even its own online encyclopedia, the “Atlantipedia.”

Mark was introduced to this arcane world a few years ago, when reporting a magazine story on history’s greatest philosophers; he discovered that everything we know about Atlantis actually comes from two dialogues written by Plato around 360 B.C. Stranger still: Mark learned there is an entire global group of amateur explorers who are still actively and obsessively searching for the lost city, based on Plato’s detailed clues. “At the time,” Mark writes, “I did not yet understand that Atlantis is a virus, and that I’d been exposed.”

It’s a virus that would lead him all over the globe. Three years, eight countries, and countless fascinating experiences later, Mark has written a book full of irresistible characters and intriguing locales. Mark has appeared on NPR, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, and his previous work has been well and widely reviewed by outlets including The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, People, Entertainment Weekly, Men’s Journal, Outside Magazine, and the Associated Press, who praised Mark’s last book as “A story that hooks readers early and then sails along so interestingly that it’s one of those ‘can’t-put-it-down’ books.”
