Animals, Drumming, Games and a Movie … At the Library Over the Holidays!

The holiday break has long been a time when the Library pulls out the stops, expanding its usual programming to include extra activities that ensure that the break means fun – and hot chocolate – for all ages. This December, during four days of special programs from December 26 through 29, people who visit the Library can pound on Japanese drums, hold a bullfrog, and play a customized Pelham Monopoly game.

As always, all Library programs are free to the public. Below is a listing for programs old, new and ongoing that will ensure an entertaining holiday vacation for all!

Family Film: The Lego Ninjago Movie
Tuesday, December 26, 2 – 4 p.m.
The week kicks off with a screening of The Lego Ninjago Movie, an animated film, released earlier this year, that is just coming out on DVD. According to IMDB, it’s about six young ninjas – Lloyd, Jay, Kai, Cole, Zane and Nya who are given the responsibility of defending Ninjago, their island home. Gifted warriors by night, “using their skills and awesome fleet of vehicles to fight villains and monsters”, things are different during the day, when they are “ordinary teens struggling against their greatest enemy: high school.” Voice talent includes Jackie Chan and Fred Armisen. Rated PG. Registration is not required, and hot chocolate will be available!

Kizuna Daiko Japanese Taiko Drumming
Wednesday, December 27, 2:30 – 3:30 p.m.
Drumming is coming to the Library for the first time! Youth Services Librarian Oz Coto-Chang signed up Kizuna Daiko Japanese Taiko Drumming for this program after he saw them at a performers showcase for youth services librarians in the Westchester Library System who are looking to bring great programming to their respective libraries. The ensemble, featuring Chika Croteau, Akiyo Furukawa, Yoko Ibanez and Les Von Losberg, will perform traditional and contemporary Japanese drumming. Kizuna Daiko is one of a number of tri-state ensemble Taiko groups spreading Master Ogouchi’s vision, bringing the joy of Taiko to as many people as possible. And, yes, attendees will be able to take a turn on the drums! Parental guidance is suggested because the program involves loud drumming. Registration is not required.

Offline Family Time: Board Games and Hot Chocolate
Thursday, December 28, 3 – 5 p.m.
Here’s another opportunity to spend a relaxing afternoon at the Library with friends and family, as Library staff breaks out its great stash of board games for all of you to play. Games include chess, Scrabble and a customized Pelham version of Monopoly. To keep everyone warm on a cold December afternoon, hot chocolate will be available, and the Library may also bring out its multitudes of Legos! Registration not required.

Animal Embassy Brings Winter Animals to the Library
Friday, December 29, 3 – 4 p.m.
Animal Embassy returns to the Library over the holiday break with a children’s program featuring animals that are known for being able to withstand the cold of winter. Yes, there will be furry creatures, including hares and chinchillas, but a bullfrog will also be on hand! Attendees will be able to handle the animals, and registration is not required.

Ongoing Programs Continue During the Break

In addition to the special programs above, the Library will also hold its ongoing programs during the winter break. These include:

Spanish-English Story Time: Saturday, December 23, 10:30 – 11:15 a.m.
Spanish-English Story Time is for anyone who wants to introduce their children to another language. Sign-up is not required.

Story Time: Tuesday, December 26 for ages 3 – 5, 10:30 – 11 a.m.; Wednesday, December 27 for ages 2 and under, 10:30 – 11 a.m.
Story Time continues right through the holiday break. Because of this program’s popularity, a ticketing system will be used to prevent overcrowding, starting at 10:15 a.m.

Adult Coloring: Thursday, December 28, 6:30 – 8:45 p.m. (Drop-in for as long, or as little, as you want.)
Relax over the holidays by attending this session of the Library’s popular adult coloring program. The Library supplies everything — even snacks! No experience or registration necessary, but remember, this is for grownups only. Check out the events calendar for times in January.

For a full listing of Library events, check out the Library website, the monthly e-newsletter. The Library staff wishes you a joyous holiday season!
