See What the Elementary School-Aged Book Clubs Will Read in February!

See below for what the Library’s new elementary school-aged book clubs are reading this month!

First-Grade Book Club: Grandma’s Purse by Vanessa Brantley-Newton
Monday, February 11, 4:30 – 5 p.m.
This picture book is about the relationship between grandmother and granddaughter, and the fun they have going through Grandma’s Mimi’s purse. What’s in there? Jewelry, tokens from around the world, or sometimes an item especially meant for her granddaughter.

Second-Grade Book Club: A Nest for Celeste by Henry Cole
Thursday, February 21, 4 – 5 p.m.
Celeste the mouse is looking for a home, and searches for it in the toe of a warm boot, in her new friend’s shirt pocket, and deep in her heart, where her friendships live. This short novel has an interesting back story – Celeste’s new friend is the apprentice of John James Audubon and filled with black-and-white illustrations.

Third-Grade Book Club: Words with Wings by Nikki Grimes
Monday, February 11, 5 – 5:30 p.m.
This novel is constructed entirely of verses written by Gabby, a daydreaming girl who begins writing to escape the turbulent fights of her parents, guided by a new teacher who encourages her. The book is “a celebration of one girl’s indomitable spirit and of a teacher’s ability to reach out and change a life.”

Fourth-Grade Book Club: A View from Saturday by E.L. Konigsburg
Monday, February 25, 4 – 5 p.m.
What connects the four sixth-graders competitors at Epiphany Middle School besides the fact that they win the Academic Bowl competition? This novel from Newbury Award winner Konigsburg, explores those connections, which don’t appear at all on the surface.

Walk-ins are welcome to the Library’s elementary school book clubs, but registration is requested by calling the Library at (914) 738-1234. Book club books are usually available at the circulation desk for immediate checkout.
